Tutorial: How to add ruffles to a dress bodice

Ruches geven elk jurkje nét een feestelijk extraatje en ze zijn niet heel moeilijk te maken. Je kunt ze maken in dezelfde stof, of juist een contrasterend stofje kiezen. Naast jurken kun je er natuurlijk ook een kussenhoes of tas mee opvrolijken!

Ruffles can add just that little bit extra to a dress, and they are not difficult to make. You can make them in your main fabric, or choose a contrasting one like I did. And I bet they would look good too on bags or pillowcases!

Bepaal hoe breed je het middenstukje tussen de ruches wilt hebben.

Leg het patroondeel voor het voorpand op de stof, middenvoor aan de stofvouw, en schuif het patroondeel zoveel op dat je de breedte van het gewenste middenstuk rechts van je patroondeel houdt. Knip het voorpand uit de stof.

First, determine how wide you want the middle piece between the ruffles to be. Put your front bodice pattern piece on the fabric, the center front on the fold. Then move your pattern piece to the left, just enough to create the desired width of the middle piece to the right of your paper pattern piece. Cut out the front bodice.

Naai langs de lijn van je middenvoor, met de verkeerde kanten van de stof op elkaar. 

Sew the center front line.

Bepaal hoe breed je het ruche wilt laten uitsteken, en tel daarbij op de helft van de breedte van het middenstuk. Dit is de uiteindelijke breedte van je ruche. Ik nam de stof dubbel zodat ik niet hoefde omzomen. Knip je ruche anderhalf keer zo lang als de hoogte van het voorpand en in de zojuist bepaalde breedte.

Determine how wide you want your ruffles to be next to the middle piece and add half of the width of the middle piece. This is the total width of your ruffle. I doubled my fabric so I did not have to make another seam. Cut two ruffles with a length of 1.5 times the dress bodice and the width you just calculated.

Vouw dubbel met de verkeerde kanten op elkaar en strijk. Stik vlak naast de vouwlijn door. Stik met een steeklengte 4 op 0.5 cm van de kniprand en rimpel het geheel tot de lengte gelijk is aan het voorpand. 

Fold your ruffle, wrong sides facing, and press. Sew next to the fold. Put the stitch length of your machine on 4, and sew at 0.5 cm of the edge. Pull your thread at both sides until your ruffles have the same length as the bodice.

Vouw het voorpand open, en vouw het middenstuk naar een kant. Speld nu je ruche tegen de middennaad en stik vast op 0.75 cm van de rand. Vouw het middenstuk naar de andere kant en herhaal dit voor je tweede ruche.

Open the front bodice, and fold the middle piece to one side. Pin the first ruffle exactly parallel to the center stitch line, and sew at 0.75 cm away from the edge. Fold the center piece to the other side an repeat this for the second ruffle.

Vouw nu het middenstuk open met de vouwnaad precies bovenop de stiknaad. Speld en stik aan beide zijden vlak naast de rand door. Klaar! Je kunt nu je voorpand verder verwerken zoals in de beschrijving van je jurk.

Now open your middle piece and press the folding line exactly in the middle on the first stitch line. Pin and topstitch at both sides, just next to the edge. Finished! You can now continue sewing the rest of your dress.
