Catherine cardigan

There is no such thing as too many cardigans in a little Dutch girls' wardrobe, so when Sewpony designed the sweetest new cardigan pattern, I was very eager to test it.

It features some feminine gathers, different sleeve lengths and two fun bow options that will spice up any cardigan collection. I sewed the long sleeves with pussy bow in on of the most colourful fabrics I could find in my stash. It's an organic light sweater knit, that I'd been hoarding for a while, but this seemed the perfect project for it.

The pattern comes together very quick and easy, especially if you use snaps for closures like I did. Tying a neat bow was more of a struggle than I anticipated, but for a kindergartner who loves to practise bow-tying skills this bow is one of the most fun things about the whole garment. And now, let's party those grey skies away!

Wrapped in wool

After knitting each of my boys a stranded sweater last year (here and here), I wanted to complete the sequel by making my little girl one too. She prefers cardigans over sweaters, so I decided to face one of my biggest fears and try a steek for the first time. Putting in many hours to knit a sweater and then cutting it open to create a cardigan... it really made me shiver.

I started off with the Nancy cardigan pattern and let the girl pick the colours. After years of endless pink, she chose mustard yellow to my big surprise! This pattern is quite brief, so if you're a bit unfamiliar with knitting colourwork, I'd recommend to check out some extra information sources like this excellent video on stranded colourwork. For good and extensive background information on how to make a steek, I looked here.

Knitting the cardigan in superwash wool turned out to be a real beginners mistake. This kind of wool is not very well suited for a steek, as it unravels easily. I managed to secure it and it all ended well, but I will pick a different yarn next time.

Because yes, there will be a next time! The steek itself was not at all scary, and being able to knit the sweater seamlessly in the round first makes any project so much faster.

The sizing on this pattern seems a bit of an issue. The gauge of my test swatches was correct, and I chose the right size according to her measurements. However the finished garment looks more like a dress than a cardigan to me... The upside of it is that she will get several years of wear out of it, but I would recommend anyone to size down!

With the leftover yarn I knit her a little Alma bonnet. I tested the English version of this pattern and I have nothing but praise for it. The sizes range from 9 months up to 8 years, making it one of the few bonnet patterns for bigger girls. The pattern is extremely detailed with lots of pictures, so if you can knit and purl you can make this. And the fit around the head, especially the back, is so good. I already knit four of them, and am afraid I'm getting addicted...

A new Ila dress

Afgelopen winter naaide ik een Ila jurk die een echte voltreffer werd. Krakende vrieskou of zonnig zomerweer, spelen in het bos of op verjaardagsvisite, de jurk moest áán. Toen de lengte meer op die van een tuniek begon te lijken, wist ik dat het tijd werd voor een nieuwe.

Last winter I sewed an Ila dress that turned out to be a huge hit with my daughter. No matter if the weather was freezing or hot, if the occasion was fitting or not, she wore the dress whenever she could. When it started to resemble a tunic more than a dress, I knew it was time for a new one.

Bij Miss Matatabi vond ik een mooi dunne en zalig zachte babyrib, die ik combineerde met gouden paspel en een warm gele voering.

I found a nice soft and thin corduroy at Miss Matatabi and combined that with golden piping and a mustard yellow lining.

Mouwen liet ik achterwege, ze draagt 's winters het liefst een longsleeve onder haar jurk. De lengte vonden we samen nog iets te lang, maar aangezien het kind momenteel met lichtsnelheid lijkt te groeien, zal het niet lang meer duren voordat ook deze jurk tunieklengte bereikt heeft...

Sleeves were left out, she prefers layering her dresses with longsleeves in winter. It is still a bit long now, but since the girl seems to be growing at light speed these days, it won't be long before this dress has reached tunic length, too...

En wat denk je, mocht ik de onzedig korte jurk al uit de kast verwijderen? Niets ervan: 'Nu heb ik er gewoon twee!'

And guess what, was I allowed to remove the indecently short dress from her closet? Absolutely not: 'Now I have two!'

Barefoot romper

Mijn kleine meisje klimt opeens in bomen. Ik houd mijn adem in terwijl ze hoger en hoger gaat, of ineens ondersteboven als een aapje aan een tak bungelt.

My little girl discovered how to climb trees. It takes my breath away watching her high, high up there, or hanging upside down from a branch like a monkey. 

Alle mooie jurkjes in de kast zijn wel heel onpraktisch voor haar nieuwe hobby, dus naaide ik een Barefoot romper van Twig&Tale, een perfecte speeloutfit.

But all the pretty dresses in her closet are not too practical for her new hobby, so today I present you the Barefoot romper by Twig&Tale as a playproof treeclimbing outfit.

Deze harembroek geeft veel bewegingsruimte, en ik ben dol op de deugniet die ze erin wordt. Het patroon is ontworpen voor geweven stof en heeft veel verschillende opties voor een steeds net iets andere look.

This haremstyle romper has lots of room to move around freely and I love the way it looks on her. The pattern includes many options for different looks and is designed for woven fabrics. 

Ik naaide de broek in een zachte gespikkelde sweaterstof. Bij het gebruik van rekbare stoffen voor dit patroon is het wel belangrijk om de schouderbanden volledig te verstevigen.

For even more comfort, I made it from a thick jersey. When sewing this pattern in knit fabrics it's very important to use interfacing on the full length of the straps.

Twee antieke knopen en een stukje lint uit grootmoeders doos completeren het plaatje. En let vooral niet op de oude regenlaarsjes die ze weigerde uit te doen voor de foto's omdat die kennelijk onmisbaar zijn bij het bomen klimmen...

Two vintage buttons and a piece of vintage ribbon complete the look. And please ignore the old wellies that she refused to take off for photos as they're apparently essential for treeclimbing...

Summer pixie

Toen de zomer bij ons eindelijk arriveerde, moest dat gevierd worden met een snel en simpel naaiproject.

At last summer arrived in our neck of the woods as well. And of course I had to celebrate with some quick summer sewing.

Ik gebruikte de Pixie pants van Twig&Tale en de Juliette top van Sewpony. Allebei zonder ritsen en knoopsgaten en dus zó klaar.

I used two quick patterns: the Pixie pants by Twig&Tale and the Juliette top by Sewpony. Both without zippers and buttonholes and finished in no time. 

Het patroon van de Pixie pants werd recent uitgebreid met verschillende tuinbroek-opties, maar ik koos de simpelste korte broek versie in een linnen wat bestand is tegen buitenavonturen. Omdat ik een klein verrassinkje niet laten kon, voerde ik de zakken met de stof van het topje en zette er een kantje tussen. Een klein detail toevoegen hoeft niet altijd veel tijd te kosten.

The Pixie pants were recently upgraded with a lot of cute romper options, but I picked the simplest pants version in linen that can survive all kinds outdoor adventures. Because I like little surprises, I lined the pockets with the blouse fabric and embellished with a piece of cotton lace. Personalizing a piece of clothing doesn't always have to take a lot of effort, right?

Voor het topje gebruikte ik een zachte katoenen voile, perfect voor de echt warme dagen. De zoom van de kraag besloot ik even snel met de rolzoomvoet te naaien. Niet een heel slim idee, want rondingen met dit voetje zijn toch wel wat uitdagend. Enfin, ik worstelde en ik geloof dat ik won.

The top was made from a soft cotton voile, perfect for real hot days. I practised with my rolled hem foot on the collar, which was probably not the smartest idea, because rolled hems on curves are a bit challenging to say the least. But I think I won!

Nu hoop ik op een warme zomer, zodat ik mijn niet zo heel kleine meisje veel in dit setje kan zien rondlopen.

Now I'm hoping for a lot more sunshine so I can see my little one running around in this outfit all summer.

Upcycled Geneva cardigan

Hoe graag ik mijn dochter ook in zomerjurkjes zie rondfladderen, helaas betekent lente in ons klimaat ook frequente hagelbuien, nachtvorst en druilerige dagen, wat vraagt om warme laagjes. Toen Coffee&Thread testers nodig had voor een vest, was ik dan ook meteen om.

Unfortunately in our climate not every day in spring is sunny. Frequent hailstorms, nightfrosts and clouded skies create a need for warm layers, even in May. So when Coffee&Thread needed testers for the Geneva cardigan, I jumped on it.

Het Geneva vest dat vandaag gelanceerd wordt, is geschikt voor zowel jongens als meisjes. Kun je je mijn enthousiasme voorstellen toen ik dat zag? Een fijn patroon dat ook geschikt is voor mijn bengels! Echter, de dochter miste echt nog vestjes, dus mijn testversie is de meisjesvariant met Peter Pan kraag.

The Geneva cardigan, releasing today, is meant for both boys and girls. Can you imagine me jumping up and down when I first saw it? Something that is also suitable for my boys, yay! However, the girls' closet was in need of a cardigan most, so my testversion is a girly one with peter pan collar.

Maar eerst over het patroon. Het is een vest met 4 verschillende kraag opties, waarvan twee unisex. Er zijn ook twee verschillende mouwen, zakken en een knoopsluiting. De instructies zijn gedetailleerd en duidelijk en gidsen je naar een nette afwerking, ook aan de binnenkant.

Let me tell you about the pattern first. It's a cardigan with 4 different collar options, two of which are unisex. There are two sleeve types to choose from and optional pockets. It closes with buttons or snaps. The instructions are detailed and clear and aim for neat finishes on the inside, too.

Dit vestje maakte ik uit een oude lamswollen trui. Het kostte bijna meer tijd om uit te puzzelen hoe ik de mottengaatjes kon omzeilen bij het knippen, dan om het in elkaar te naaien. Uiteindelijk kwam ik toch iets stof tekort, wat ik oploste door een stukje tricot aan het knopenpad te zetten. Het speelse randje wat dit oplevert, vind ik stiekem wel een leuk detail.

For this one I upcycled an old lambswoolen sweater. I think it took me more time to figure out how to cut the pattern pieces around the moth holes than actually sewing it! As I ended up running a little short of fabric, I added some of the collar fabric to the front bodice. I like the little detail this adds. The pockets were left out (no more fabric remember?).

Alhoewel dit vest bedoeld was om alvast zomerjurkjes onder te kunnen dragen, claimde dochterlief ineens een schrijnend rokjestekort. En dan geldt 'zij vraagt, wij naaien' nietwaar? Ik maakte dus een supersnel rimpelrokje op elastiek (tutorial hier) van gestreepte double gauze en het kind was zielsgelukkig.

Although this cardigan combines perfectly with dresses, the girl told me her closet was also in desperate need of skirts. So I made her a quick gathered skirt out of double gauze with silver elastic. She totally loves it!

Juliette dress

Toen Suz van Sewpony en Jill van Kneesocks and Goldilocks de handen ineen sloegen en samen het patroon voor de Juliette dress&top ontwikkelden, wist ik meteen dat dit precies was wat hier in de kast miste. Ik mocht testen en vrees voor het begin van een nieuwe verslaving...

When Suz from Sewpony and Jill from Kneesocks and Goldilocks developed the pattern for the Juliette dress&top together, I knew immediately that this would be the perfect addition to my daughters summer wardrobe. I tested the pattern, and I fear for a new addiction...

De basis is een A-lijn jurk of topje met een grote ruffle-kraag. Door de drie mogelijke mouwlengtes en een optioneel knopenpad is er veel variatie mogelijk.

Essentially this pattern is an A-line dress or top with a big ruffle collar. Three different sleeve lengths and the optional button placket allow for a lot of variation.

Ik koos voor een mouwloze jurk met zakken en knoopsluiting achteraan. Zoals gebruikelijk verlengde ik een maatje. Het jurkje valt precies boven de knie en heeft genoeg bewegingsruimte zonder te wijd te worden.

I made a sleeveless dress with pockets and a button closure in the back. As usual I lengthened by one size, which is really easy to do with this pattern. The dress hits just above the knee and allows for enough freedom of movement without being too wide.

Het patroon is zo gemaakt dat het netjes maar ook snel in elkaar zit. De afwezigheid van rits en knoopsgaten maakt het ook uitermate geschikt voor een beginnende naaister. Typisch een project wat je nog snel even onder de naaimachine gooit wanneer bij het inpakken van de koffer blijkt dat dochterlief nog wel een extra topje voor aan het strand kan gebruiken.

The pattern is well made with clean finishes, but it also comes together quickly. The absence of zippers or buttonholes makes it very suitable for a beginning seamstress as well. It's typically a project you could quickly sew when you're packing suitcases and notice that an extra top for the beach is in order.

Coffee&Thread blogtour: Travelling in style

 Today is the last day of the big Coffee&Thread pattern tour, and it's my turn to show you my makes. Make sure to read until the end of this post; there is a great discount and a major giveaway!

I'm a big fan of Olga's patterns and tested several of them. The Eleena and Ila dress made it onto the blog, the Ania tunics somehow didn't. The patterns are all very well made and have a nice vintage vibe to them. And Olga is such a sweet and encouraging person... So of course I said yes when I was invited for this huge pattern tour celebrating everything Coffee&Thread.

We were given a complete carte blanche as to what we would make. Normally I would go on a total hacking expedition, but this time I didn't. And that really means one thing: I just love these patterns the way they are.

The Mulberry tunic was the first pattern I bought from Coffee&Thread years ago, but somehow I never sewed it. I once taped and traced it, but life happened and that was it. Shame on me, because it's such a nice one, both for boys and girls. I wanted a very simple and natural look, and omitted pocket and button loop. The beautiful sand coloured double gauze is enough.

The Polina dress is a very recent pattern and makes for a perfect twirling party dress. The dress has different options (don't we all love options?) and I made the long frills combined with a full circle skirt. The girl insisted that she did not want ties, which would have made the dress even more festive. My fabric was wide enough to cut a full circle without seams.  I used the same Kokka double gauze, in a dusty peach colour. The bodice was spiced up with some Nani Iro. The only small hack I performed, was cutting the bodice and sewing the frills in between instead of topstitching them onto the outside.

The weather is still quite chilly around here, so brother and sister decided it was time to travel to somewher warm and started packing. 'I'll carry the suitcase, don't forget your hat, sis!' And off they went, looking for blossoms and sunshine.
