A new Ila dress

Last winter I sewed an Ila dress that turned out to be a huge hit with my daughter. No matter if the weather was freezing or hot, if the occasion was fitting or not, she wore the dress whenever she could. When it started to resemble a tunic more than a dress, I knew it was time for a new one.

I found a nice soft and thin corduroy at Miss Matatabi and combined that with golden piping and a mustard yellow lining.

Sleeves were left out, she prefers layering her dresses with longsleeves in winter. It is still a bit long now, but since the girl seems to be growing at light speed these days, it won't be long before this dress has reached tunic length, too...

And guess what, was I allowed to remove the indecently short dress from her closet? Absolutely not: 'Now I have two!'

Pink baby clouds

A while ago a little girl was born into our family, and of course I couldn't resist sewing her a little welcome gift. I simply love sewing for babies. Making them something special feels like a way of acknowledging what a miracle the arrival of a new person really is.

Another great thing about baby sewing is the little amounts of fabric you need. This ensemble was entirely made out of little scraps of delicous double gauze left over from this dress.

The little dress is the Grace dress, a free pattern. It has a few different views and closes with buttons in the back. The double gauze would have combined well with some lace or embroidery embellishments, but I think I love the simple look even more.

The shoes in size 1 are so tiny that I wasn't sure if I could put them together nicely. It turned out to be no problem, especially with these thin fabrics. The shoes are fully reversible, so should the nani iro not match her outfit of the day, they can be turned into a plain pink pair. The Wayfarer shoes pattern comes in a wide range of sizes up to 9 years old, so my kids are already picking fabrics...

Juliette dress

When Suz from Sewpony and Jill from Kneesocks and Goldilocks developed the pattern for the Juliette dress&top together, I knew immediately that this would be the perfect addition to my daughters summer wardrobe. I tested the pattern, and I fear for a new addiction...

Essentially this pattern is an A-line dress or top with a big ruffle collar. Three different sleeve lengths and the optional button placket allow for a lot of variation.

I made a sleeveless dress with pockets and a button closure in the back. As usual I lengthened by one size, which is really easy to do with this pattern. The dress hits just above the knee and allows for enough freedom of movement without being too wide.

The pattern is well made with clean finishes, but it also comes together quickly. The absence of zippers or buttonholes makes it very suitable for a beginning seamstress as well. It's typically a project you could quickly sew when you're packing suitcases and notice that an extra top for the beach is in order.

Coffee&Thread blogtour: Travelling in style

Today is the last day of the big Coffee&Thread pattern tour, and it's my turn to show you my makes. Make sure to read until the end of this post; there is a great discount and a major giveaway!

I'm a big fan of Olga's patterns and tested several of them. The Eleena and Ila dress made it onto the blog, the Ania tunics somehow didn't. The patterns are all very well made and have a nice vintage vibe to them. And Olga is such a sweet and encouraging person... So of course I said yes when I was invited for this huge pattern tour celebrating everything Coffee&Thread.

We were given a complete carte blanche as to what we would make. Normally I would go on a total hacking expedition, but this time I didn't. And that really means one thing: I just love these patterns the way they are.

The Mulberry tunic was the first pattern I bought from Coffee&Thread years ago, but somehow I never sewed it. I once taped and traced it, but life happened and that was it. Shame on me, because it's such a nice one, both for boys and girls. I wanted a very simple and natural look, and omitted pocket and button loop. The beautiful sand coloured double gauze is enough.

The Polina dress is a very recent pattern and makes for a perfect twirling party dress. The dress has different options (don't we all love options?) and I made the long frills combined with a full circle skirt. The girl insisted that she did not want ties, which would have made the dress even more festive. My fabric was wide enough to cut a full circle without seams.  I used the same Kokka double gauze, in a dusty peach colour. The bodice was spiced up with some Nani Iro. The only small hack I performed, was cutting the bodice and sewing the frills in between instead of topstitching them onto the outside.

The weather is still quite chilly around here, so brother and sister decided it was time to travel to somewher warm and started packing. 'I'll carry the suitcase, don't forget your hat, sis!' And off they went, looking for blossoms and sunshine.

Blogtour Frederique dress

Wrap dresses make me happy and the Frederique dress, the newest pattern by Compagnie M. is no exception to that. The pattern has a few beautiful options for sleeves, pockets and princess seams, but I completely fell in love with the simplest version: a reversible wrap dress.

Perfect for a kindergartner who loves to dress up: when you get bored with your outfit halfway through the day, all you need to do is turning it inside out! It also comes in handy when you spill your breakfast over it, and want to hide the stains from your mummy...

To make this dress suitable for wearing year round, I made two different styles. The 'outside' is made out of one of our favourite fabrics by Cotton&Steel. The dark colours look good on my girl in winter. The yellow accents brighten it up a little.

For the summery 'inside' I used a light pink gingham fabric paired with the same yellow. Can summer please start now?

Fabric: Riflepaperco for Cotton&Steel (floral), Cotton&Steel solid ochre (yellow fabric), local market (pink gingham).

Ila winter dress

English below

This year we celebrated the holidays with Ila. No, not a distant aunt who came over to visit nor an addition to the family, but a much loved new pattern by Coffee&Thread.

The Ila dress pattern is perfect for making a warm winter dress. The a-line shape makes it easy to use thicker fabrics and the optional full lining can be used to create extra warmth. But the lines on the front (with hidden pockets!) really turn this little dress into a special one for me. Is it just me, or does this scream for piping? The pattern does not include specific instructions on how to use piping, and I recommend these tips to anyone who feels a bit insecure about this.

For this testversion I used a soft corduroy, lined with a very soft Roomseven fabric which I also used to make the piping. The length in this dress is still a bit short, which I like. However, in the final pattern a bit extra length was added, so everyone can decide for themselves what length they consider decent ;)

The dress was an instant hit, and was even chosen to be her Christmas dress!

Friday dress

English below

Patroon: Friday dress van Petit a Petit

Petit a petit patterns launched another new pattern: the Friday dress. This shirtdress is a perfect pattern for a dressy outfit, but with the right fabric choice it is also fine for a daily playing dress.

The bodice is quite form fitted, while the skirt makes any girl twirl. With three collar options, short or long sleeves, a full skirt or an a-line, this pattern can be customized to every taste. I made the 'slim version', both bodice and skirt without gathers, inseam pockets and the belt. I kept the dress fabric neutral, so I can easily combine with different belts (and different outfits).

Even though this is not really a beginners pattern, the fenomenal instructions ensured I had no problems during the sewing process. If you don't own a sewing pattern by petit a petit, you should buy one, just to see the instructions once. Really, they're incredibly good! The only real challenge was the 100% cotton chambray, that turned out to be very much of something else when I ironed it. Oops!

The sizes range from 9 months to 12 years, and printing options include A4 and A0 (or wide format for copyshop) and layered printing.

You can still buy the pattern with a 25% discount today only via here, so if you want it, hurry!

Pattern: Friday dress by Petit a petit
Fabric: a not so cotton chambray (dress), les fleurs by cotton and steel (belt)

Disclaimer: I received the pattern for free in return for testing it, but writing about it was not mandatory. My opinions are my own.
