The first version of upcycled Charles pants was a great succes with my boys, so I immediately cut a second one. Choosing piping and buttons was easy, but I was still missing something. And once a thought like that gets stuck in my head, the project has to wait until I find a satisfying solution...

Finally I ended up re-using the original waistband from the jeans, and adding some extra colour in the stitching. It's all in the details, isn't it?

Pattern: Charles by Compagnie M.
Fabric: A pair of jeans and some star cotton from my stash.

Not all children have average sizes, and when my toddler proudly exchanged her diapers for underwear it was very frustrating that most of her pants and leggings no longer fit.

The solution turned out to be so fast and simple that I regret not trying it earlier: making her leggings myself.

I took the only well fitting pair in her closet, and drew a pattern from it. It was finished so fast... From now on every outfit has a matching legging!

Wanna try too? This tutorial tells you almost exactly what I did. I say: give it a try!

Our smallest rascal, who is actually a little princess, decided that it was her turn to get something new sewn for her. Because I wanted to increase the chance that she'd actually wear it, I opted for a dress. In pink.

The pattern is nice and easy, but oh that blind zipper... that was a while ago. I only had to take it apart once, and to me it looks fine now. Even the pattern in the fabric continues, but you can't see that, as I - very strategically - cut in between te flowers ;)

Charles pants pattern test

bij uitzondering een keertje in het engels...

The little rascals and I felt honoured to be selected to test a new pattern: the Charles pants by Compagnie M. Marte lived up to her reputation and again designed a pattern with many different options and details. We like that; being able to make such completely different pants from just one pattern. Shorts, pants, dungarees, it's all possible.

For the middle son I made recycled pants: using a pair of dad's ripped jeans and some scraps of striped fabric dating from my own childhood. I once owned a pair of dungarees made out of these stripes... That fabric was really meant to be sewn into children's pants, until the last scraps, I guess. The only thing new we used were the buttons that the boy picked out himself, because these had to be hammered in. Cool, mum!

Because he's a skinny boy, I started out with the pattern pieces that matched his waist (5Y) and lengthened them to a size 9Y. The details in the pants did not impose any problems thanks to the very clear and elaborate pictures that come with the pattern instructions. You really can't go wrong here, as long as you read the instructions carefully ;)

The pants fit well, and can handle serious boy play. He doesn't want to take them off anymore, and wear them on his next outdoor adventure. Just perfect!
