Vandaag ben ik te gast bij de Waterfall Raglan blogtour, die vandaag in het teken staat van dagelijkse outfits. Aangezien mijn dagelijks leven zich op het platteland afspeelt en voor een groot deel bestaat uit het temmen van drie ongeleide projectielen, moet daarvoor geschikte kleding in de eerste plaats praktisch zijn. Als het er bovendien nog leuk uitziet, is de kans groot dat we een favoriet hebben! 

Today I'm part of the Make it mine waterfall tour, which is all about day looks now. My daily life takes place in the countryside and mostly consists of managing three wild kids, so suitable clothing should be mainly practical. If it looks nice on top of that, it will most probably be a winner.

Na een wat delicate stof voor mijn eerste versie koos ik nu voor een iets steviger kwaliteit: Flamé van Nosh in een kleur die goed vlekproof is ;) Stoffen van dit Finse biologische stoffenlabel stelden nog niet teleur (het shirt dat ik anderhalf jaar geleden maakte is na veelvuldig wassen nog steeds als nieuw), dus ik wist dat ik hiermee wel goed zat. De stof heeft iets minder rek (ongeveer 40%) en doorval dan mijn eerdere versie, maar het draagt heerlijk.

After a bit of a delicate fabric for my first version, this time I chose sturdy quality: Flamé by Nosh in a colour that is perfectly stainproof ;) This Finnish organic fabric company has not dissappointed me yet (the shirt I sewed over a year ago, still looks new despite a lot of washing), so I knew this would be good. The fabric has less stretch (around 40%) and drape than my first version, but it it is oh so comfortable.

Onze jongste boef vindt het maar raar als ik voor mezelf naai, en toen ze hoorde dat dit patroon er ook in haar maat is, was ze een en al oor. Voor de goede orde: ze draagt géén wijde tops en houdt zeer beslist niet van donkerblauw. Maar twinning met mama bleek zo leuk dat ze helemaal om ging! Misschien wordt het tijd voor een grote versie van de Cascade Maxi dress, zodat ik haar van de zomer een maxi jurk kan aansmeren!

Our smallest rascal thinks it's very strange when I sew for myself, and upon finding out that this pattern comes in her size too, she was all ears. Let me clarify one thing, though: she refuses to wear wide tops and most certainly does not like dark blue. But twinning with mum was so funny that she totally changed her mind! Maybe it's time for a grown up version of the Cascade Maxi dress (hint), so I can trick her into a maxi dress this summer!

Waterfall raglan for women

Na een serie kinderpatronen is er nu het eerste volwassen patroon van Chalk&Notch, de waterfall raglan. Naaien voor mezelf is iets wat ik niet heel vaak doe, maar aan deze top kon ik niet weerstaan.

After a series of childrens patterns, Chalk&Notch just released their first women's pattern, the waterfall raglan. Sewing for myself is something I don't do often (enough), but I could not resist this top.

De waterfall raglan is er als tuniek of jurk en met korte, 3/4 of lange mouwen. De nauwsluitende pasvorm aan de armen gecombineerd met wijd uitlopende onderkant geeft het een moderne vrouwelijke look die het zowel netjes als casual goed doet. Daarnaast is het zo'n comfortabele top dat de meeste testers niet konden stoppen na één exemplaar.

The waterfall raglan comes in both tunic and dress length with short, 3/4 or long sleeves. The fitted sleeves combined with some width at the bottom provide a modern female look that is perfect for both dressy and casual wear. On top of that, it's so comfortable to wear that most testers couldn't stop after just one version.

Gabriela weet wat ze doet; de instructies zitten goed in elkaar en zijn kraakhelder. Het gebeurt niet vaak dat ik tijdens het testen geen enkel foutje in de instructies kan vinden!

Daarnaast zit de top ook supersnel in elkaar. Het rimpelen is het enige wat een beetje tijd kost. 

Gabriela is a real professional; the instructions are well written and crystal clear. It doesn't happen to me often that I can't find at least a small mistake during testing! The waterfall raglan is also a very quick and easy sew. Gathering the ruffles was the most time consuming part of the sewing.

Ik gebruikte een goed doorvallende jersey van viscose en wol, lekker zacht en met een heel lichte glans. Het patroon leent zich ook prima voor iets dikkere stoffen, zolang ze maar goed doorvallen.

I used a drapey wool/viscose knit. It's very soft with the slightest shimmer. The pattern also works well with slightly heavier fabrics as long as they have a good drape.

Louisa dress for women

Naaien voor de kinderen is één ding, maar kleding voor mezelf maken heeft toch iets - uhm - spannends. De eerlijkheid gebied te zeggen dat ik vooral daarom nog niet eerder een aansluitend kledingstuk naaide. Iets waarin alle rondingen precies goed passen. Een heus geval van koudwatervrees was ik. Wás.

Toen de uitnodiging voor het testen van de Louisa jurk voor dames van Compagnie M. in mijn mailbox belandde, wist ik meteen dat dit mijn kans was om voor eens en altijd met deze naaifobie af te rekenen. Dus deed ik eens gek, zocht en vond een gezellige bondgenoot, en reisde af naar Antwerpen om in één dag met 30 andere bloggers de jurk te naaien.

De Louisa jurk  (maat 30 -50) is een veelzijdig patroon. Ik koos voor een versie met symmetrische rechte zakken en 3/4 mouwen in een zalig zachte bio stof van Natuurstoffen. Maar met kapmouwtjes, het peter pan kraagje, of de karakteristieke kangaroe-zak krijg je weer een heel andere jurk. Er is een uitgebreide maattabel zodat je voor het naaien al kunt nagaan of je een patroon aanpassing moet doen. De heldere instructies bevatten ook een dossier aanpassingen waarmee iedereen de jurk op maat zou moeten kunnen maken.

In plaats van mijn jurk keurig in een dag in elkaar te zetten, testte ik een borstaanpassing (full bust adjustment). Vier testjurken verder en enorm veel wijzer geworden, had ik eindelijk de juiste pasvorm te pakken. Gek genoeg was dat een standaard maat 38 met slechts een heel kleine aanpassing. Dit naai-avontuur leverde wel een mooie uitleg over de full bust adjustment op in de instructies van het patroon. Testen is soms ook hard werken ;)

Om te voorkomen dat iemand ooit nog eens zoveel pasvormen nodig heeft om tot de juiste jurk te komen wil ik eenieder het volgende met klem op het hart drukken:

- Laat jezelf nauwkeurig door iemand anders opmeten.

- Maak altijd, echt altijd eerst een testversie in een goedkope stof, en naai die nauwkeurig (je kunt met pen de stiklijnen op de stof tekenen).

- Volg op je allerbraafst de instructies.

- Heb je patroonaanpassingen nodig en vind je dit eng; boek een workshop bij Marte.

En wat we dan overhouden is een jurk die qua pasvorm perfect overeenkomt met de maattabel, echt iedereen flatteert die ik erin gezien heb en zalig draagt.

Disclaimer: Ik kreeg het patroon gratis in ruil voor het testen. Erover bloggen was niet vereist, en mijn mening is natuurlijk mijn eigen.

Sewing for my kids is one thing, but sewing something form fitting for myself has always scared me a little. When I was invited to test the Louisa dress for women by Compagnie M., I knew this was the perfect opportunity to face my fears.

The Louisa dress is a versatile pattern. I made my dress with 3/4 sleeves and symmetrical straight pockets in a wonderfully soft mix of organic hemp and linen. But the dress looks very different with the kangaroo pocket, capsleeves or peter pan collar. The pattern includes a good sizing chart and extensive instructions on how to make adjustments for a perfect fit.

Instead of quickly putting my dress together, I tested a full bust adjustment. Four muslins later and having learnt a lot, I finally produced the right fit. This resulted in a thoroughly tested FBA instruction in the pattern instructions. But you should never ever have to sew this many muslins as long as you take this advice:

- Let someone else measure you very accurately

- Always, always sew a muslin in a very cheap fabric, and sew it precisely

- Be good and follow the instructions to the letter

(Can you guess where I went wrong?)

And then we're left with a dress that has a very good fit, is flattering everyone I've seen in it, and is a joy to wear.

Selfish sewing: Lotta skirt

Alhoewel er hier regelmatig nieuwe kledingstukken onder de naaimachine vandaan rollen, naai ik zelden voor mezelf. Toch liggen er een aantal stofjes met bijbehorend patroon al een poos te wachten. Het zal wel iets zijn met 'tijdgebrek' en 'kinderen eerst'. Het was deze week selfish sewing week, en dat gaf me precies het duwtje wat ik nodig had om eens zo'n al tijden wachtend project aan te pakken.

Toen ik dit stofje maanden geleden bij de Roomseven Outlet vond, wist ik meteen dat het een Lotta rok moest worden. Voor mij. Dat het even bleef liggen is achteraf bezien niet zo erg, want de kleuren zijn prima voor de herfst. Dochterlief was het er roerend mee eens, deze stof wilde zij beslist níet hebben. Wat ook wel een klein beetje jammer is, want hoe schattig was het geweest als we assorti over straat gekund hadden!

De kleine meisjesversie van dit rokje naaide ik vorig jaar al, dus dit exemplaar zou ik wel even snel in elkaar zetten. Tja, en als je dan te snel wilt... Het tornmesje werd dus wel een paar keer gebruikt, maar dat had niets met het patroon of de overduidelijke instructies te maken. Wel met vermoeidheid en drie dingen tegelijk willen doen.

Ik naaide het patroon zonder veranderingen, met voering. De pasvorm is precies zoals ik het wilde en het zit heerlijk. Misschien toch mezelf eens wat vaker op de naaiprojecten-lijst zetten?

Although the kids own a lot of mom-made clothes, I rarely sew for myself. I do have quite a few fabrics and patterns waiting for me, but somehow never get around to sewing them up. Last week it was selfish sewing week, and that gave me just the push I needed.

When I found this fabric at Roomseven months ago, I immediately knew it had to become a Lotta skirt. Just for me. I don't mind too much that it took a while before I made it because the colours are just perfect for fall.

Last year I already sewed the little girls version of this pattern, so I expected a quick sew. I must have lost my focus a bit, as I had to use the seamripper a bit more than planned. The pattern and the perfect instructions were definately not to blame for this!

I made the pattern without any alterations and with a lining. The fit is exactly how I intended it and I'm very happy with my new skirt. Maybe I should put myself on the list with sewing projects more often?

Julia trui

Toen Marte van Compagnie M. mij vroeg om haar Julia sweaterpatroon in volwassen maat te testen, hoefde ik niet lang na te denken. Dat ik tijdelijk zonder naaimachine zat wegens een flinke reparatie, en een berg andere december projecten had, negeerde ik voor het gemak even. De lockmachine kon tenslotte al het werk doen, en deze trui zou een snel project zijn. Mijn enige twijfel was of het me wel zou staan, zo'n ruim model trui.

Ik koos voor een dunne okergele viscose en een tricot voile. Het middenpaneel bestaat uit twee lagen: viscose met de voile erover. De halslijn is de verbrede halslijn uit het patroon gecombineerd met de grote kraag.

De trui valt mooi ruim, alhoewel ik precies de voorgeschreven maat naaide. De viscose is wat zwaar en behoorlijk elastisch in zowel lengte als breedte, wat kennelijk een ruimere pasvorm oplevert. Stofkeus is iets om even goed op te letten als je deze trui maakt.

Mijn zorgen over hoe het model zou me zou staan verdampten meteen bij de eerste pasbeurt, maar er wachtte nog een verrassing: wat zit die trui enorm lekker! Om in te wonen, zo comfortabel!

Zoek je een mooie trui voor de feestdagen, of een lekkere bank-hang-outfit, dan is dit een ideaal patroon. Tot zondag kun je het patroon hier kopen met een korting van 10% met de code 'julia-women-launch'.

When Marte from Compagnie M. asked me to test her Julia sweater pattern for women, I didn't have to think long. I quickly ignored the fact that I temporarily did not have a sewing machine, and a lot of other pressing december projects. The overlock could do the job, and I was promised it would be a quick project. The only small doubt I had, was if the model would look good on me, but thats minor right?

I opted for a thin viscose jersey and a stretchy sheer fabric. The middle part consists of two layers of fabric: viscose covered with the sheer. The neckline is the wider neckline option from the pattern combined with the big collar.

The fit is quite wide, although I sewed exactly the size I was meant to be. This probably has a lot to do with fabric choice: the viscose is very stretchy but also a bit heavy. Apparently this results in a slightly wider fit. Lucky me, I like that!

My initial doubts about the looks of this model on me disappeared quickly during the first fitting, but another surprise awaited me: This sweater is sooo comfortable!
